About Macedonian Vineyards

Macedonian Vineyards was established in the region of Kilkis by a group of farmers bonded together by their dedication to quality, extroversion and their determination to re-energise their communities around a high added value cultivation. While Crimson Seedless is dominant in the region, the group is also experimenting with new varieties suitable for the local terroir; which is characterized by light soils, regular afternoon breezes during the growing season and marked temperature variances between day and night.

The group members have taken to heart the significance of high tech farming and operate with the use of weather stations and soil sensors that allow them to minimize inputs, maximise quality and optimize yields. Geotagged data analysis and interpretation, as well as agronomic advice and traceability are provided by the American Farm School, Thessaloniki. At the same time, the group hosts pilot implementation projects of cutting-edge technologies, such as photonics, organized in collaboration with IFAC – CNR, Firenze and INOV INESC Lisbon.

This enthusiastic adoption of digital technologies has allowed the Macedonian Vineyards to become adopted as a pilot demonstration farm network by the European Interregional S3 Partnership on High Tech Farming, headed by the Region of Tuscany.

The Macedonian Vineyards are part of a network of farmers’ groups and cooperatives cultivating table grapes in Northern Greece and supported with training and consultancy by the American Farm School under the project “A New Agriculture for a New Generation”, solely funded by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation and coordinated by the University of Rutgers.
